I´ve just passed through the region of Burgos and into Castilla y Leon. A few days ago a girl I met who is also walking the camino told me happily that "Tomorrow we will make a turd!". This seemed a strange thing to say but she seemed very pleased about it, then I realised she meant we were nearly a third of the way along the camino=woo!
The stretch of the camino from Burgos to Leon is across the "meseta" which is basically an enormous, flat, hot, windy plateau at 800m, which will take me about a week to cross. I´d seen photos of the meseta before, and they were all of massive expanses of scorched brown dusty land. However that´s in the summer, so a lot of it is actually quite green now, but still very flat, hot and windy!
Actually had one day of terrible wind and rain a few days ago, and I have never been so pleased to see clouds- made such a change from relentless sun! Stayed that night in a church "refugio" where they let pilgrims on the camino sleep in the bell tower- a bit chilly and felt a bit like quasimodo, but the sight of wet clothes hung across the alter was quite funny and they gave us chocolate when we arrived so I was happy.
All the pharmacists along the camino have amazing knowledge and experience with all the common walkers´ problems, and I have contemplated starting a fan club for camino pharmacists (however it would have to come second to my duties as founder member of the semi-political organisation "Perigrinos Contra Ronchadors" (Pilgrims Against Snorers)). I was especially grateful for the pharmacia´s help after I made the unfortunate discovery of "pus in the foot" a few days ago- now I know how all those horses and cows feel! However after a bit of self-surgery, all is restored and my feet are actually 100% happy and blister free again-yey! Yesterday I passed a river which was reported to have the magical power to cure gangrene, and I had been somewhat worried I would have to put that claim to the test!
(If you can open the google map, I´m in Fromista, if you zoom in you will see me eating ice cream, yum!)
