I´m now nearly through the region of La Rioja= wine country, which has been really beautiful, endless fields of vines and path lined with poppies and other flowers. Also one of the vineyards had a fountain of wine for pilgrims on the camino, but as I was passing it at 7am decided against filling up my 2litre water pack! Had my lunch in a field of lavender a few days ago which I thought might cancel out the smell of my feet but I fear not!
My ankle is now better thanks to a god-like pharmacist who introduced me to ibruprofen gel. However
after several hot days of hard stony paths my feet are now starting to fall apart :( I was hobbling through a village the other evening in flip flops and a group of 3 old Spanish ladies insisted on seeing my feet! "Ooo what happened to that bit?" Me: "I don´t know it just went purple". One of them then showed me her feet, which was, um, a lovely bonding experience and not at all weird.
Feels like I´ve been walking for years already and am only just over a quarter of the way! At this rate my feet will have evolved into hooves by the time I finish.
There´s a lot history on the Camino as Pilgrims have been walking the path for over a thousand years, and as well as a lot of interesting buildings etc I´ve been learning that there are a lot of legends, mostly involving the devil appearing to pilgrims and offering them water, shelter etc in exchange for souls. After another day when I accidently ended up walking in the heat of the day with no water, I can quite understand why you would be tempted! Although if the devil appeared to me he would be telling me to take the bus, eat an ice cream and have a snooze. But I have resisted these temptations so far and tomorrow will be going into the region of Burgos! Only 650 odd kilometres to go!
1/4 of the way is really far! Just looked on google maps and it looks like you've made impressive progress. I feel like you've only just left. Can't believe you didn't sup from the wine fountain- not even a little slurp?
ReplyDeleteHave you walked the bit you did before yet?
Keep those feet held together somehow, maybe with some string or tape.
I don't like the idea of anna having to string her feet together! I hope there is a nice massage/pamper place for when you reach the end!
ReplyDeleteWell done lovely - you are doing amazing job :)
